The Former Congresswoman Creates History as First Female Governor

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has had seventy-four governors, each one of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger broke this glass ceiling by winning the election as the state's inaugural woman leader in Virginia's history.

Centered Around Economic Issues and Strategic Opposition

Ex- US representative and CIA case officer won with a campaign that stressed economic pressures and deliberately opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the individual.

Early Life and Education

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on 7 August 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at age 13. Her dad was an military serviceman who later worked in police work; her mom was a nurse and volunteer.

She studied at the University of Virginia, earning a diploma in French studies. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a educator before embarking on a career in public service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” Spanberger informed supporters at a rally in the city of Norfolk last Saturday.

Government Roles

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she handled involving narcotics, exploiters and financial criminals. She executed legal orders, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and overseas.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her husband Adam, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a world map and inquired of their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to shift from a federal career, to state involvement because she was correct. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in Virginia, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In that period, she resolved to run for Congress, which people told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in half a century.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I saw my member of Congress over and over again work against the healthcare law. And I knew I had to step up. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She prioritized less visible matters: expanding internet access to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a standing for partnering with Republicans and was often cited as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she believed turned off moderate voters, cautioning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of AOC.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she declared she would not seek re-election for a fourth term and would rather run for governor in the next election.

Her platform focused on themes of civic duty, support for education and infrastructure and defense of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her credibility on defense issues and she spoke of government work as a calling rather than a career.

Election Victory

This enabled her to overcome Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on cultural issues, including the claim that Spanberger is an extremist on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that individual districts should determine whether trans youth can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the candidate more out of step with the center of the commonwealth's citizens.
